Getting to know Julia

Meeting a brand new person is a very interesting process, and I definitely don't have a handle on this one yet. But here are some observations... Quite unlike her brother at the same age, she is very mellow and relaxed. She doesn't do much. Mostly sleeps (probably at least 16 hours a day) and feeds. Sometimes she'll cry when we change her diaper, but really not too much. She keeps Andrea up at night with extended feeds, but I really can't complain too much. When she wakes up, she is in quiet and alert mode, studying you with these funny baby eyes. And when she sleeps, she spreads her aura of relaxation over whoever happens to be holding her. It's the most amazing property. Holding her, makes you want to go to sleep. You have to be careful. Seriously. Oh yeah, and she's also very cute.

Blue Clothes and VIA trains

I have already mentioned that Jakob considers often himself to be a VIA train. It so happens that most of his clothes, and especially his pants, are blue. And (for non-Canadians out there) VIA trains, which are the equivalent of Amtrak or PKP, are also blue. I never really noticed this seemingly random coincidence until this morning, when I realized that it had a deeper meaning. It happened when I asked him to put on a pair of green pants with white stripes.
J: "Daddy, I can't wear green pants with white stripes because then I will be a GO train! And I'm a VIA train!"

Taking Daddy to Daycare

In preparation for Julia's coming Jakob started daycare -- just two days a week. At first the going was tough, but he has adjusted very nicely and is starting to enjoy it. I usually walk with him in the mornings while he rides his tricycle. Yesterday we had the following conversation:
J: "Am I growing?"
P: "Yes, you are growing very fast."
J: "Am I going to grow bigger than you, Daddy?"
P: "Yes, you definitely will one day."
J: "When I'm bigger than you, can I take you to daycare?"

The Real One?

Jakob got a toy doll as a present to help him adjust to Julia's presence. Her name is Kaya, which was our runner up to Julia. Jakob was very excited when he got Kaya at the hospital, and wanted to take her home. Then he asked: "Can we take the real one home too?"

Jakob is a wonderful big brother. We were kind of worried about how he would take to having a little sister, but he is really amazing. Always asking to hold her, kiss her, and if she's not around wondering where she is. Of course this might all change when she starts snatching his toys.
